Measurement of Physical Quantities

As physical quantities are very important in physics, so also are their measurements. There are special instruments designed specifically for the measurement of each physical quantity.

We will be looking at the measuring instruments for the measurement of some quantities - length, mass and

volume.

1. LENGTH

Length can be measured with (a) Metre rule    (b) Vernier callipers    (c) Micrometer screw gauge

                                                            Metre rule
                                                            Tape rule

                                                            Vernier calliper
                                                            Micrometer screw gauge
2. MASS
The mass of a body can be measured with a balance such as (a) beam balance    (b) lever balance    (c) chemical balance    (d) direct reading balance
The weight of a body can be measured with a spring balance.
Different types of balance
3. VOLUME
The volume of a liquid can be measured with a (a) measuring cylinder    (b) pipette    (c) burette
4. TIME
Time is usually indicated nowadays with clocks or watches.

Scalar and Vector Quantities

We have learnt in previous posts that, in physics, quantities are properties or values that can be measured. Measurement is very important i...
